Start small, by counting how many calories you are eating. Get a digital scale, read up about daily caloric expenditure, calculate yours, weight the stuff you eat, find out how much are you eating, read about safely dieting. This isn’t dieting yet, just checking the current situation. If you go even with the TDEE, you can diet by just picking up running or walking depending on your current weight, and burn a couple hundreds calories just by that, and it could not sound like a diet to them because you eat the right amount. To go on a diet sounds generic and possible dangerous to a parent, but if you show them the science they might feel safer about this.
