I believe the most important thing is the connection with God or Source or Higher Power. Religion is more of a man-made way of connecting and staying connected. I'm actually Christian, but I still think everyone needs to find their own way.
As for me, I respect all religions, I respect people that have no preference, I respect atheists because they have their right to their opinion. But, I love God. I love the changes that have happened in my life since I began my walk with Him.
I think there are some really mellow Christian churches out there, if that's your thing. But like someone said before... check out some different churches and see what works for you.
If you pick up a bible and start reading, don't start out on page 1. Read Psalms, Proverbs, Corinthians and other books in the New Testament (minus Revelations because its too confusing). The Old Testament has its place but I find it too brutal and I like the "Good News", the positive things and all the things I can actually apply to my life that help me become a better person.
And for the people who think religion caused the world's problems: People use religion, basically hijack religion, to motivate people for their cause. There is one thing in common with all the evil people in the world... they are HUMAN! The human element. Even if religion was removed from the planet, you still would have to deal with people being people.
Best of luck finding a church! Write me if you have questions. And sorry, I got off topic there for a second.... :)
