Video Games and you

1

This is for a paper I’m doing, so if you can answer please do, I need as many to answer this as possible.

Are you male or female?

What kind of video games do you play and how often do you play them?

How old are you?

How do you think video games affected you?

Have the affected your social life? Relationships? etc.

Do you think that video games in anyway has had a negative affect on you? positive affect?

Where do you live? (just the country)
Anything else you wish to share with me would be great

-Male, 23, from Canada -Mostly FPS, Racing and RPG -Once or twice a week when I have time -Affected me? I'd say yes in a positive way. Helps with critical thinking and problem solving and it's been a good stress relief when somethings bothering me and I can just dive into a game. -I don't think they've affected my relationships but I have made friends over online games.

Male I used to play everquest until about a month ago (for 10 years straight) and I play iphone games like BTD5 and PvZ2 Age: 53 I think they help to ruin my marriage. Hence why I stopped the main game I played. I found it as a social outlet for when I felt like my life was going badly. It allowed me to succeed virtually when RL was a fail. Overall pretty negative feelings about playing. USA

Male

What kind of video games do you play and how often do you play them?
A lot of rpgs and online games

How old are you?
23

How do you think video games affected you?
I think the primary way they affect me is that I use them to escape. When I'm worrying about something else, it lets me escape into them and forget my problems.
I think it also helps with feeling dominance. As a man there is the inherit need to be the dominant or alpha male. But as a man who was only ever okay at sports I did not feel this in the "real world"
BUT, competing in an online environment still allows me to actually experience dominance over other people with using my mind instead of brawn.

Have the affected your social life? Relationships? etc.
In the past yes. A lot of girlfriends haven't liked it because they don't really understand it or have an interest in it. So they sort of see it as a waste of time and is seen as devaluing of my character.
My current relationship, no. Because she actually likes that I play video games.
My Social Life, Similar to most relationships. I have had some people thing that it's a waste of time and wonder why I would rather play a videogame than watch tv with them or something. But it has also given me a platform with which to bond with other gamers.

Do you think that video games in anyway has had a negative affect on you? positive affect?
I would say neutral. Some people would say it's bad because I sometimes use it to escape from my anxieties and I don't actually deal with my problems. BUT I don't think that's the video games. If I didn't play video games I would just find another way to escape like reading or TV.

Male Anything but racing games. Typically Fighters or RPGs 18 Video games allowed me to be more open and social ironicly. Video games actually gave me a common interest with the majority of my friends and we have became very close because of them. I have actually becamse more vulgar and having a more twisted sense of humor, with more morbid subjects being the topic of my jokes. But I wouldn't say thats too much of a bad thing. In fact I have gained self confidence and more of a creative outlook because of it. 'Murica.

What kind of video games do you play and how often do you play them? I play X-Box and computer games that are fantasy or Lego and not that often.
How old are you? 16.
How do you think video games affected you? They don't, not really. I just play them when I'm bored and looking for something to do.
Have the affected your social life? They haven't affected my social life.
Do you think that video games in anyway has had a negative affect on you? positive affect? I think that they have a slightly negative affect on me because I play them when I'm bored which means I'm using them as a reason not to more important things like school work.
Where do you live? Australia.

1. Female
2. Every kind of video game and on any platform. My favorite being role playing, simulation, and action adventure. For example: GTA 5, The Elder Scrolls (all), The Sims (all), etc. I play them all the time. At least once a day.
3. 20
4. I definitely use them as an escape from reality. So they probably affect my relationships due to less talking.
5. They haven't affected my relationships too much, like I said just less talking to people. I never really had much of a social life.
6. Negative: less exercise, less social interaction, escaping reality, more irritable due to staring at screens for an extended period of time.
Positive: better problem solving, faster reaction time to anything-especially while driving.
7. New York, USA

I think that video games are not bad for anyone-in moderation as with all things. They do not make anyone more violent, I believe they help to relieve stress.

-Female -RPGs and platformers mostly, sometimes horror. I play on weekends or whenever I have enough free time -23 -Games are an escape. I can spend a few hours pretending im not me and I dont have to deal with whats going on in my life -The only affect it seems to have in my social life or relationships is that it is a common interest and something to do with those people -Its mostly a positive affect since it is a healthy way of escape -USA
