Focusing on the present moment helps me get through tough moments. The problem with some people, including me is that in a tough situation you can tend to focus on the failures of the past as well as becoming fearful of the future. This is a dangerous mindset because you aren't living in the present moment, you aren't thinking, "Ok, what can I do to make this situation better right NOW." Instead you're so immersed in different time periods/bad thoughts that you just make the situation worse for yourself. So to answer your question I would say determination on focusing on the present, although shifting your perspective is a more important factor.
