Is being a “listener” scary?

2

I’ve only just started on this website and I want to go on the chat and “listen” but I’m worried that their problem will be too serious, if I can’t help and I end up offending them or if it stays on my mind in a negative way (that kind of thing ;-) ). If that makes sense to anyone, please could I have some advice on being a listener here? ;-)

It's not scary at all. The only thing that scares me most is not finishing the answers before the person gets to hear me and then they disconnect.

As a frequent ventor here I can give you a few advices.
- Please introduce yourself. Your real name is not necessery, you can even you a nickname but starting with a friendly introduction is important.
- Please don't start with something like, "How may I help you?". Even trained professional therapists don't do that. You are not a costumer sales person. A nice friendly "How are you?" is much better.
- Don't condescend the problem your ventor is trying to tell you. The majority of the problem can change from one person to another. You might face to all kind of subjects, accept that.
- If you think you are not the suitable person for your ventor or ventor's problem, please tell him your reason before you disconnect, so you won't break any hearts.

Beyond all these, thank you for being a friendly person and caring enough for the humanity. :)

If you can't help or even listen helpfully, say so and leave. If you are worried it will affect your mood, then maybe it's best to not do it and seek other ways to help other people.
For more check the threads in this forum (sucidal venters, manual, politely disconnect):

Whatever you do, don't just leave when you feel in over your head. Tell them why you're leaving first! Nothing is more disheartening than going on a therapy website and mid-session the guy just leaves!

some times if you feel like theyre in a very bad situation and you cant help.. but in that case you should say so and leave.
