In for a penny, in for a pound. If you're going to ask one question regarding the logic of religion or decisions made by an alleged God, then you may as well ask others or as many as you can find.

It doesn't make sense to you because it doesn't make sense. It defies logic. Just as parents who beat their children are mistaking themselves into thinking they are teaching their children respect, so people are mistaken into thinking that eternal life requires eternal punishment; that an "all-everything" deity can contradict itself without contradicting itself, such as an all-loving deity that still creates concepts like sin then creates elaborate riddles in life, then creates places of eternal punishment for beings it claims to love. Eternal suffering is not an act of love. You are correct in your feeling that it makes no sense.

If you would like to discuss this further, my inbox is always open. Alternatively, you can listen to the popular atheism podcast "Dogma Debate" at dogmadebate.com, they are very kind and respectful of the beliefs of others and are not "angry atheists". A common guest on the show is a devoted Christian named John Christy, who is a published author.

Do not let go of your skepticism.

Because love doesn't mean only good things my friend. Love embraces sometimes teaching us that doing the wrong you must pay the price. For example, if someone kills thousands of people, that person normally is considered "bad" and should go to hell. But from the point of view of that single person that killed thousands, there would be a good reason on that person mind. So, what if hell existed just to explain for that person that he/she did wrong and should pay for it?There is nothing wrong in teaching someone a lesson, if it is for its own good, even if it will be painful for that person, there will be a reason for that punishment: redemption for love...Well, I tried to explain in some words my thoughts, hope it could be useful for you, my friend

Christian modern chilled down view: hell is being away from god. No fire, just the pain of being away from love, and the devil (or we) created it, not god. So, why does god let hell be? Probably because tampering with you being able to walk away from god would interfere with your own free will. You have the option to get absolution for your sins anyway, and to pick churches who aren't preaching hate. With purgatory, hell seems pretty hard to get in, it would be like you and Hitler and a bunch of serial killers.

I really like the way @Salx laid that out. So many of the ideas surrounding heaven/hell have been influenced by medieval art, hollywood, and unfounded cultural assumptions that lead to really terrible theology. In the New Testament, the vast majority of the times you see "Hell" in English, it has been translated from the Greek word "Hades." In English, "Hell" carries with it all those aforementioned bad connotations that have no root in the actual words of the New Testament. Hades simply was the place where the dead go, with no judgement on whether the person was good or bad. With that in mind, I totally agree with @Salx. Heaven is communing with God, taking part in the love/relationship that he offers--while hell is the exact opposite. C.S. Lewis would say that even though we don't realize it, we are either experiencing heaven/hell here on earth right now.

Where else are people supposed to go if they don't accept gods love? We have free will, and if we choose not to accept jesus that's where we go. Read this to learn what hell really is. http://biblelight.net/hell.htm

well we are all god children and you need to punish your children for the wrongs they do and you don't tell your kids to stop in the middle of their punishment
