Um, not sure if this is what you're looking for, but have you ever listened to Dengue Fever? I guess it would fall under the indie category, and the singer has a really powerful voice :)

I'd say you try Maria Mena; her songs are a bit on the deeper end but beautiful none-the-less.

I'd suggest maybe some Nujabes, substantial, Marcus D, Bop alloy, I find their music to be quite Hip hop like but I'd definitely check them out.
