There are absolutely techniques to get more restful sleep, but I'm more concerned about you stating that you experience physical pain when you try to sleep. That is not normal. You should consult your primary healthcare physician for that.
As for getting to sleep easier, you need to practice clearing your mind. When I started learning for myself, I simply pictured a blank, white background, and I would call it to my mind by mentally saying to myself "Blank".
From that point, my only focus was pushing thoughts away and focusing on that mental white background. Any thoughts or impulses that came to mind, I would visualize them on the white background and wipe them off, clearing my mind.
On particularly bad days, I would quietly repeat a few words to myself while visualizing the blank background. I would close my eyes and say "blank. quiet. still. empty." until my mind quieted down and slowed to a crawl, until nothing came to mind and interrupted my focus, bringing my focus into the present moment.
It takes time and practice, but you can absolutely do it. Do not lose heart and don't let the frustration that occurs when first practicing get the better of you. The overactive mind is stubborn about interrupting a quiet moment, but you can discipline yourself to find a quiet center. :)
Good luck, and if you need to talk, vent, or get anymore tips on clearing your mind, my inbox is always open.
