Help with an ODD Problem

1

I stopped cutting about 2 months ago, thanks to help from a few friends and my youth minister. Well, I picked up another habit to help when I’m stressed.. now I chew on my fingers and suck my thumb, well, I kinda just have it in my mouth all the time. It’s kinda embarrassing, but it’s hard to quit doing it. I don’t do it in public, or I try not to, just before I go to sleep or after I have a panic attack, I get quiet and my thumb goes straight in my mouth. I’m trying to break the habit, but have been unsuccessful. Any tips on this?

First of all, congratulations my friend for stopping to harm yourself. I know it is not easy, I am trying to stop too. Regarding your new "addiction", sometimes I find myself sucking my thumb but it doesn't happen to me often. If you want to stop, you can replace you thumb by a spoon. Or you can distract your mouth with bubble gum, toothpich, a pencil or whatever. if this doesn't help you can wash your hands with strong odored soap (like the one we use to wash th dishes), that way when your thumb will come close to your face you wouldnt want to put it in your mouth. I hope I've been helpful.
