Antidepressants? Do they Work?

0

I’m usually not the type to go to medication for relief, but it’s getting really bad. I’m losing all motivation, it’s getting harder to fake being happy, and I don’t want to bring others down just because I’m feeling down. I’ve been dealing with depression for 5 years and it’s caused me to fail in a lot of things. My grades have gone down and I find it harder to socialize. I want to change that, but I feel so stuck in this depression. Should I turn to antidepressants? Do they work? Is it the only way out?

antidepresants aren't the only treatment and it works diffrently for each person. If you wan to avoid taking them there are alternatives. Some really good excersice and talking/working through the emotions through group or therapy can help but its all up to you with what you feel confortable with

Anti depressants, they are very misleading, I feel like the doctor tells you they will work and you will train your brain to think that they are working when you take them, as with a lot of other medication, there so many other ways to get rid of depression. Let's start with, if you really want to take something for depression, I suggest you do some research online for natural happy pills. There are herbal supplements that are for depression, St. Johns wort is actually one of them and you can even get it in tea form. You can also try an extra curricular activity, a sport, a club, anything to keep your mind busy and build up those social skills again. Also try thinking as much as you can with happy thoughts, remember that the thoughts that you send out to the universe is what you are going to receive, so thinking positive is actually going to attract more positivity into your life. Try thinking about your future, all the things you want to do and experience. I hope this helps, you can message me if you have any questions.

I have to disagree with atteactingthelight. Mine work. My doctor doesn't tell me if they help me or not. She never said they would. She let me find out on my own. With out mine I would probably still losing all hope. A psychologist only goes so far and isn't for everyone. I'm not dependent on mine.

I wouldn't say that they're the only way out, there are a few other ways. They have helped me though, I'm currently on Zoloft. If you do decide to go that route, don't expect it to be a magical "cure-all". In my experience, they just help me cope. They don't work for everyone and there are many different medications out there. You may get lucky and have the first medication you try be the one that helps the most; but unfortunately for some people, it can take years until they find one that works. And others never do. Just be patient with it and don't give up if the first few don't help. Personally, I would recommend seeing a therapist for a while and discuss the different options with he/she to figure out what's best for you. There isn't a straight "yes or no" answer to this. I hope this helps!

I don't recommend them! Once you have them, you become really dependent on them and when you quit taking them...you feel really bad. I really just recommend seeing a psychologist and trying different types of therapy!
