5 months clean…

I haven’t cut in 5 months, but I’ve been having really strong urges recently and I’m just about ready to give in. What do I do?

Hello there! It's a good start to get rid of anything that you could use for cutting. When I quit, I threw away my razors, so when the urge comes up I really can't cut even if I want to. Additionally, I got myself a "Anti-Stress-Kit". It's a special box that I open whenever I feel extremely stressed or want to hurt myself in any way. It's got quotes by my favourite people, a teddy bear and a book in it. Most people also put candles/something that smells nice in there and you can basically put in whatever you want and whatever feels right. Another thing that really helped me: go for a run or go to the gym. I am aware that this sometimes doesn't help and you just can't get yourself to do anything, but that's fine. However, workouts are really great because you can let off steam and you'll feel so good afterwards. (In fact, if you run regularly for about 30 minutes it has the same effects as a mild antidepressant). If you ever just want somebody to talk to you, you can message me and I'll be happy to try and help you out even further.

Get away from anything that could be used to harm yourself with. Take a walk and get your mind off things. The urge will exist and will continually get stronger the more you feel the Option that it is there to "Help you".

it usually helps me to watch a happy tv show or movie (studio ghibli films are great!) you could also just do relaxing things like drinking tea, sleeping a lot, doodling, reading good books, look at pictures of flowers or animals, or listen to happy music

Have you ever just cried because you really wanted to cut, but you knew you shouldn't? Sometimes its better to just fight over it. It's hard, I know, - I've been "officially" clean for 2 years but slipped up about 5 times. But you just have to fight through it. This might be a little strange but having sex, masturbating, or exercising helps because it releases endorphines - which is the same thing that that happens when you cut. You just have to find it in you to say that you're stronger than this.
