if someone tells you they’re anything but straight, the rudest thing you can do (apart from Bible-beating about how they’re going to hell and now you guys can’t be friends) is to question it. Like, there’s a 99.99% chance that whoever’s coming out to you has put up with more shit than you want to know about, has questioned themselves every day for years, has understood that in about 40 states of the US they can be fired for being gay, and depending on where they live it may be illegal to fulfill their sexual desires, get married, or have/adopt kids. They have seen some fucking shit, and the last thing they want is to not be taken seriously, because it’s a serious fucking thing. Being gay isn’t an outfit choice or the decision to like glitter. People don’t choose to be institutionally discriminated against because they’re bored. They definitely don’t choose to come out to someone just to be asked if they’re a “real” homo-, bi-, pan-, a-, or trans- sexual.
