I think he might be shy to actually talk in person but if he's so interested in texting there might be something going on there. I would start by saying hi when you see him and talk to him normally, like you would talk to your friends. For example if you see him you can say 'hey, how are you?' That's a good start.

You need to approach him. Ask him what his problem is. I've heard of cases where someone befriends you and is nice to you, but only behind closed doors. And at school, they act like they don't know/like you. Sometimes because the people they know don't like you, so they act like they don't like you either.If it is that case, he doesn't deserve your affection. He's trash if he treats you like that, you deserve better.

Since I'm not sure what kind of communication you had with him...whether that be over the phone, over via text, in person, etc. I've noticed that things tend to get awkward when you talk a lot over text...and then in person it's like...woah, who are you?! He may just be shy too, like everyone said. Usually the outgoing ones don't make things awkward but since they are he's most likely shy.
