The group of guys in the apartment that have Marcellus Wallace’s briefcase are associates of the devil who have stolen his soul.

Jules is sent by God to retrieve Marcellus’ soul, hence why he recites Ezekiel 25:17 “And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers”
