try being friends with him first.... Maybe get some of your friends and his friends together and go to the mall or something. Sit at his lunch table and talk to everyone there. Eventually it won't be so awkward to ask him to hang out after school. Who knows, in the process of getting to know him and his friends better, you might find out he wasn't the person you thought.
