Find something that really interests you. Something you can listen to.
I started with podcasts. Found one about mathematics, with short clips (about 5 mins). It took me about 2-3 clips before I was asleep. The other ones kept playing in my ears all night. Very soothing.
And now I’m opening university lectures about subjects I would like to take. I always have my computer running next to me in my bed, always with my earphones on, but it helps me drift away real quick.
It may not work with everyone. But I think that having something to concentrate on, something I am genuinely interested it, makes it a win-win situation. If I stay awake, I’m learning something. If I fall asleep, I’ll try again tomorrow, and I’ll have slept. Concentrating on the subject rather than concentrating on falling asleep, that’s the real benefit.
To me, at least.
