Because it is an assigned mental schema. Mental schemas are the result of programming that takes place during early childhood and are generally formed between the (social) ages of 3 and 13. This is where the bulk of our programming takes place. During this time we develop ideas about the world that are morseo handed to us by others than developed based on actual life experiences. Parents,co-habitants,siblings,peers,teachers,mentors,relatives,family friends and the cultural influences that surround us where we grow up all play a large role in how we develop, which mental schemas we form and why. Racism is a philosophy- a type of mental schema that is handed down. It is important that we realize that we cannot control who we are born to,raised by nor where we were born and raised geographically. It is our role to challenge certain beliefs and values that were handed down to us as we get older and mature. Maturation is a process that should occur physically and psychologically, simultaneously. There comes a point where each person must decide how much the belief system and views they were raised to have are fair, intelligent, useful and truly align with reality as we see it and the experiences that we have as we enter the world and establish relationships. Unfortunately, because of certain mental schemas and their ability to distort our perceptions so dramatically some people never think to challenge them and so these schemas are accepted as truths and never subjected to a system of checks and balances. In some cases children of racist parents love their parents and have the same parental bond that non-racist children have with their parents. Thus they refuse to believe or accept that a parent would ever instill false truths in them or steer them wrong. Other times childhood trauma at the hands of a person of another race, coupled with
pre-existing,racist views can serve to affirm these beliefs in an individual and impact how that person views all people of that race or ethnic identity. Whether or not a person will adopt racist views and carry them into adulthood or challenge them and find a balance that makes sense to them morally is all a matter of intellect, moral compass, outside influence and geographical factors.
We should never accept what is handed to us in this world from another. Our lives are our own and thus all of our core beliefs, feelings, opinions and decisions should be made by US to ensure they are in our best interest. When you adopt racist views you segregate only yourself. You impose limitations and boundaries on yourself and most damaging of all you live life hateful, fearful and vengeful. A constantly heightened emotional state is unhealthy for not only the psyche but contributes largely to the overall decline of one's health. The message here is: Take extreme care in what you say and do. Hate is personal and is very much like poison in that it only causes harm to the one it inhabits.
