Usually the most common reason is the sense of security, matureness and provision/protection. An older male is usually seen as more financially stable which is more appealing to younger females, whereas a younger male may be studying or may not own their own property etc. Also there's faithfulness as well, many young women feel that older men tend to be more loyal and faithful in a relationship whereas a younger gentlemen is more likely to cheat or to end the relationship to be with another female and maturity ties into that as well. People believe younger males are more likely to go out clubbing, drinking and getting upto mischief. Then there's intelligence as well, older males tend to be seen as wiser and more intelligent compared to younger males. Older males are often viewed by females as more experienced in relationships and know what a relationship truly means. Remember, these are just general theories and while they have some truth in them, they're not 100% accurate and reliable. Every female will have a different a preference, some will like younger men and some will like older. It all depends on the individual. But yes, the general pattern is that young females tend to lean more towards older men for the reasons I talked about above.
