Talking to myself?

0

I was just putting away the clothes my parents got me for Christmas and suddenly a voice that was not my own popped into my head. I started conversing with this voice (aloud) and didn’t even realize I wasn’t talking to another person until I took the laundry basket downstairs. Am I going crazy? Or is it just a quirk?

Hello FastLane, and thank you for sharing your concerns with us.

I talk to myself ALL the time. The phenomenon you are experiencing is known as "subvocalization", and is completely normal. It is your own inner monologue/internal commentary running a play-by-play of your thoughts or silent responses to stimuli.

Schizophrenics who experience "voices" confuse their own subvocalization for outside voices invading their minds. It may have been startling at first, but you'll become well-acquainted with yourself, and your subvocalizing will fade into the background. On the flip side, it is a good thing to keep a running rapport with yourself, like a personal psychological commentary. It keeps you very aware of how you feel and why you feel that way. :)

Please keep in contact and let us know how things progress. Never forget that you matter, and you are not alone.
