You wake up in the middle of the woods and have no idea how you got there or where you are at. you sit up and realize there is a knife, a rope and a small back pack of food (good for about 2 or 3 days depending on how much you eat). what are the steps you would take in order to survive, be found, and eventually get out.

Follow a stream, water always leads to civilization :D

Use the knife to cut branches off the trees to create a shelter. Use the rope to create a snare for catching small things I could eat. Also, use the knife to mark trees while I am looking for water so I can find my way back to my shelter. Find kindling and use some of the branches I cut down to create a small fire. The smoke can be used for signaling and the fire to cook food and keep warm.

Eat something, get a drink of water, climb a sturdy tree, check the sun, shoot an azimuth towards higher ground to get a better look around.

Make a sturdy walking stick/defensive stave, find reliable shelter each night, make a fire, check the stars at night to determine my relative longitude, leave carvings on anything that look like trails telling any potential passers-by that I am lost and which direction I am heading and when.

Without any other indication of location, I would likely head west. Civilizations tend to spring up in the west of biomes until you get very far north or south. Every now and then, make a very large fire in a sizeable clearing to spread smoke and maximize potential for notice, make smoke signals for S.O.S. (Though it is outdated)
