New diagnosis?

I was diagnosed with dysthymia about five years ago, but I visited the doctor yesterday after my symptoms suddenly got worse and was diagnosed with DD-NOS (depressive disorder not otherwise specified) and referred to a psychiatrist.

Has anyone received a similar diagnosis? Do you know anything about DD-NOS?

Do you mean Dissociative Disorder not otherwise specified? Because if your dr told you Depressive disorder...that is incorrect and I would suggest getting another evaluation. DDNOS is like DID (dissociative identity disorder) where in people tend to not be themselves, if that makes sense. They start to feel like they aren't who they really are kind of thing. With DDNOS people tend to feel brainwashed and things like that. Depression can be a part of it as well though and that's probably why your dr recommended a psychiatrist, because in a case that has depression they tend to want to prescribe pills to help. I don't know too much about it, just the bare basics. My knowledge comes from a BA in psych, so please don't take my words as 100% as I haven't been in a practice nor am I licensed. I hope this helps some though...

Hi AKGibson! DDNOS and DD-NOS refer to different things - the only difference in the abbreviations is the dash :( that's part of my problem - dissociative disorder not otherwise specified (DDNOS) seems to be a more common diagnosis. Thanks for your help! :)
