My cat?

I got gerbils a few months ago, meaning I can’t let my cat into my room unsupervised or he tries to knock their tank over. He’s usually fine with this as he lays with me instead of attacking the tank when he’s in my room.

A few hours ago, though, he was sat outside my room, barely moving. I was sat stroking him when I called my mum up to have a look. She picked him up and he wailed really loudly until she put him down, where he ran into the dark dining room. He’s been sat there for about an hour and when I went in, he wouldn’t move except for the occasional lifting his head.

I looked it up and it seems like he’s depressed, but the websites say that they only become depressed if an owner or a cat friend dies or leaves, which hasn’t happened. Anyone know how to deal with this?

Also, we’re going on holiday for a week soon, and I don’t know what to do if he doesn’t get better.

After looking around a little bit, it's thought that depression in cats can be related to issues with the immune system. If it's really bad, maybe it would be a good idea to have your cat checked out by a vet before you leave on your trip. It would at least help to give you peace of mind knowing that everything's physically okay with him before going away. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Get your cat to a vet. If it isn't moving about that much and has lost it's appetite something is wrong. I've grown up with several cats, and each and every time cats acted like that there was something severely wrong with them.

I think your cat might be dealing with somthing else other than depression. Make sure you get him to a vet really soon or research some things online. My cat has had bladder problems before which made him yell really loud and he would hide, im not saying this could be it but its really important you take him somewhere professional so he can be treated. Im the biggest cat person ever and would anything for my cat lmao, wish him and you the best!

That screams illness to me. Cats tend to be lethargic and isolate themselves when ill. Sometimes they display behaviours that some might link to 'depression' (lethargy,isolation,etc.). I would get him to a vet right away and have them try and diagnose. Has he been off his food lately? Drinking more or less? Producing more or less urine/stools or have urine/stools of a different colour/smell? Lack of energy or interest in things? These can also be signs of illness. Regardless I'd get him to a vet if he's really not moving around that much, that's very unusual.
