Is being transgender a mental illness?

1

I’ve heard from a few people one on this site and another from the military that it is and needs to be dealt with accordingly. Is it true or is that someone just being a jerk?

Being transgender is not a mental illness and there is nothing wrong with it. The people who are going on about hormones and SRS and dysphoria as if they prove this are wrong. First off, not all transgender people experience dysphoria. Not all trans people take hormones, and not all trans people undergo SRS. Yet they are no less trans! The stereotype of being "stuck in the wrong body" is just that- a stereotype. Some people may feel this way, some people don't feel like they're in the 'wrong' body but merely that their body does not look the way that it should, and some still identify as a gender different than the one they were born with but feel no need to change their body. Its already been mentioned that homosexuality used to be classified as a mental illness - treating people who are not what most people think of as 'normal' as somehow sick is just another way society makes it so it doesn't have to change and keeps its neat little boxes. It seems like the human race has a very difficult time widening its definition of normal, and its sad because it hurts people in the process.

That's an easy question. Of course it's not! People are stupid trying to create "normal" and spending time labeling others and telling them what's ok and not. Fuck that! Transgender is obviously not an illness!

It isn't true, but most people aren't just saying it to be mean, they honestly believe it. Just like people used to think (and some still think) that homosexuality was a mental disorder. Standard medical opinion considers it to be gender identity disorder, but don't let that make you feel like there is something wrong with you if you are experiencing gender dysphoria. As far as treating it like a mental illness, I don't think any medication is going to help someone with gender dysphoria. The best way to help them is to give them hormone treatment and surgery, IF THAT'S WHAT THEY DESIRE. Most transgendered individuals can live a very happy normal life without needing therapy or mind altering drugs. For this reason, I disagree with the notion that we should treat gender dysphoria as a mental illness.

All you're doing is spreading poison to further your twisted agenda. You know absolutely nothing of mental illnesses nor are you studying the field. You need to leave this site if you're going to hurt other people. You serve no purpose on this site other to be a dick to everyone. I have reported you to the main admins and I hope you get removed asap. Have a lovely night

I understand there are deep religious roots as well as other deep seeded philosophical arguments in place with this very sensitive discussion. In my personal belief, there are no definitive rules of sexual identity amongst humans or in nature. For hundreds of years we have known that animals do not always conform to gender, would you question a mallard or penguin for being mentally ill for this? We just have the added bonus: Humans have the technological ability to fulfill the identity of a person born not of their gender. This does not harm themselves nor others, so ask if it is moral to categorize or judge that which does not harm? Determine what is right through someones moral character, ability to rationalize and love, and if their intentions are good towards others. Not to what gender they are born to or conform to.

Seriously you haven't given me anything to prove you are a professional. You also keep making assumptions based on no information. If you want me to bring something to the table then give me something to argue.

Not a mental illness. This doesn't require a long explanation because it's easy to understand if you actually try.

It is NOT a mental illness and please don't believe it when people tell you that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Transgender just means you gender-identify differently and while some transgender people take hormones, it's not an illness. It's just a way of viewing yourself or how you think you are or should be. Some people think that it is wrong due to their religion, views, beliefs- that is their opinion and not fact. More people are accepting things like this now though, even if it is a slow process. So at least there's that.

It's definitely not a mental illness. I have many transgender friends.

No because you are a normal person just like everyone else and you are just being yourself and people are always gonna be jealous of ppl because they feel insecure about themselves.. I have a low self esteem I was bullied when I was in elementary school and sometimes my past hunts me because I still get bullied and I hate it :/
