It's much more effective to break your studying down into short periods of time so you don't feel overwhelmed.
First, divide the materials you're studying into sections and decide on single thing you're going to accomplish for the day/hour/ect. Set a timer for 20 minutes, and do nothing but study during that time. Take a 10 minute break before doing another 20 minute block of studying. Either continue until you complete the section you were working on, or take an hour long break before repeating the cycle. If you find that you're very focused and don't want to break your concentration, then go longer than 20 minutes for a certain set. Just remember that it's very important to take breaks.
