How do you walk up to complete strangers and make friends in a new area?

I’ve never been good at making friends, the ones I have were the product of environment/good people being close for the time (high school classes, sports teams) Now I’m in the military and move pretty regularly. Between training, small individualized class sizes I find myself alone without much to do between working out and other personal hobbies. I went to my first crossfit competition wand was too terrified to talk to anyone, ask what they were up to later etc. Am I weird? How does this work?

No, you are not weird.Try talking to them how do they assemble or take care about their weapons, or anything military related, this will help to "break the ice". Then ask whatever you "feel like" and related to the topic. It may be hard when you get rusted at it, but try it.

Check The fine art of small talk by Debra Fine, but go easy on the "what are you doing later?", try to be fine with interactions that don't establish an immediate commitment for the other person.
