Over the last 2 years I have drastically changed my eating habits (healthier lifestyle) so I have been buying and cooking my own food. My parents are unhappy about this as I receive daily criticism over the food I make/eat. My friends suggest that by becoming more independent I am challenging them. What do you guys think?
I think your friends are right. You parents might be feeling that you are becoming independent. If they have always taken care of you, and suddenly, that changes.
That might be because they see it as an insult, that the lifestyle they have and the food that they eat, is not good enough for you.
I think you should make it clear that you are just trying to be more healthy, by eating healthier food. And maybe tell them that they should try it, before they criticize it.
They probably feel that way because they actually enjoy caring and cooking for you. Explain to them how important this is to you and your lifestyle. Tell them how much you appreciate everything they did and do for you they will get it for sure then. Good luck
