Expectation from a counselor for anxiety

Hello,

I’ve been dealing with anxiety for long time now and 5 months ago I decided to go to a counselor.
Going to these sessions always makes me feel better and puts me in better mode, but it doesn’t change anything.
By going to these sessions and talking freely about my anxiety and the causes and the experiences I face everyday makes me feel better because I found someone ( who seems to be very friendly ) who can listen to me, but I feel that this actually helps only temporarily.

My question is:
what are the expectations I should put for these counseling sessions and does a counselor actually helps develop strategies to help or just be a good listener and tries to push me to extract the answers myself ? and Also how long does it take to notice an improvement or change in terms of dealing with anxiety.

I think the safest answer to this is to talk this through with the counsellor and see what they feel their role is and what it can/can't be. If they don't feel like they can help you in developing coping strategies they may refer you to another person/service that can either as an addition or a replacement for the counselling. Most mental health services I have been in contact with are fairly flexible with things and are concerned primarily with giving you whatever help you feel you need, and it's always okay to say that you don't think something is beneficial to you. In counselling it's always best to just be open and ask any questions or address any concerns as soon as possible, so I would just try and speak to your counsellor about this next time you see them.

First/ you need to find a social outlet so that you can be sure your immediate feeling of "better" is not just because of the social interaction you are experiencing.
