Does age define who we are as a person?

I am 15. Yes, I am “young” but should my age be what matters? I can hold a nice conversation with adults/any of my elders.. I’m not clueless. I am treated with respect, as their equal.. until they find out how old I am. Once they find out im 15, all of my intelligence and maturity flies out the window. I am no longer just someone to converse with, I am seen as a child. A clueless child. I hate that. Is there something I just don’t get? Please help me understand.

Age really isnt much of a factor for most things. The only time age really mattered for me is when Im talking about a topic that I want someone's real life experience about. Sometimes age plays a factor in that. For example, job related things or starting a family type things. Sure a 15 year old person may have ideas and opinions but they most likely wont have first hand experience with those things. But besides situations like that then I see no problem with discussion books, music, philosophy, or whatever with a person of any age (as long as they are mature enough, that is).

To be honest, I feel that age doesn't really matter. Although it is a fact that you mentally become more mature at a certain age for male and female, I seem to see alot of people who are young teens with great maturity, whilst adults in their late 20s or 30s who are still at the same stage a child. However, its just how society is. They expect you to be less if you are young and more if you are old.

In reality, age doesn't matter. However, some people act like it does. My advice would be to call people out on it. If you find an adult talking down to you after learning your age, tell them politely to stop. You can say something like "Yes, I'm 15, but that doesn't mean anything. Can we go back to talking about books/politics/any other topic?"
