College?

I know its a long way off, but I think its better to think ahead. I want to be a vet, but I think you have to go to “normal” college before that. I’m really interested in going to NYU. Any advice/ info helps. THaks

Definitely don't look into any certificate programs like ABC or anything because most of them are scams. I've found that "normal" colleges are your best bet because even though you can get certified through other schooling, most jobs won't accept them as legitimate degrees or means of being a vet. Some colleges may have Associate Degrees, so two year programs, for being a vet assistant or technician. It takes some time, but going for a four-year degree in veterinary sciences will give you a huge advantage to getting a vet job. I, too, wanted to be a vet and explored all of my options, talked to my local vet office, and did tons of research... it is frustrating, but this is what I've learned. Best of luck to you!!

depends exactly what you want to do and how much time for school you're willing to give up. i always wanted to be a vet, but i don't want to spend 6-8 years in school, nor do i have the money. if you want to be a vet tech, there are some technical schools you can go to for 2 years or so to become certified. if you want to just get your feet wet in the field, that might be an option. if you like that position then stick with it, but if not then you can always go on to be a vet. you'll need to attend 4 years of a university for "pre-vet", then you'll go to actual vet school (at least as far as my knowledge goes). my friend is going to school to become an equine surgeon and this is basically her layout for education. then you have the choice of opening a private practice, which will be hard until you establish a reputation (like a vet that comes to peoples houses, or specialty animals) or if you work for a vet office, like a local vet office or a large animal hospital or something like that.my advice is to shadow a vet, vet tech, or any position at all that might interest you. talk to them, see what they did and what types of colleges they went to, and see if they have any specific advice. then choose the college you want to go to. don't go just because its a party school, or just because your friend is going there... go there because they have an excellent program, good reputation, and a good percentage of students who go on to be accepted into veterinary study programs. do your research and check out the schools. youll be happy you did! also try and look into shadowing a student so you can get a feel of the campus.good luck!
