There’s not much you can do. Neither of you control whom you two have feelings for. I guess- if I were you- I would spend time being friends with him until either he falls in love with somebody else or you do. You could still get to know him as his friend and learn if you really like him or not.

Leave an open ear for him/her and ask them what’s up at least once. If he/she ever decides to tell you what’s bothering him/her, he/she will feel like he/she can trust you more and may open up more often. If he/she never opens up, you can’t be blamed for it and shouldn’t be upset by it. That’s what I think.
