The way I understand it, therapists may stray away from working with you if you aren’t on antidepressants. The approach I would recommend is getting a family doctor or the likes to get you a prescription antidepressant and then looking into talk therapy. The combination is usually the best way to get out of those awful depressive states.

Leave an open ear for him/her and ask them what’s up at least once. If he/she ever decides to tell you what’s bothering him/her, he/she will feel like he/she can trust you more and may open up more often. If he/she never opens up, you can’t be blamed for it and shouldn’t be upset by it. That’s what I think.
