What’s good about habits is that they can be broken. While hard as that can be to do, it isn’t impossible. I couldn’t tell you the amount of times I’ve picked up that habit and broke it again; I’d be clean for a few months and then fall back into it. Sometimes even years would pass.

I’ve been clean for almost a year now. I try even harder nowadays not to fall back into the bad habit, especially given that doing such a thing to myself also hurts the woman I love.

What I learned from the experience is that you need to rewire your brain on how to process the situation. You have to learn how to distract yourself from that want/need and focus your energy on a healthy coping mechanism instead. For myself, that would be talking it out with my girlfriend, writing, reading, listening to music, or watching funny videos on YouTube. Any form of distraction, a positive one, will do wonders.

Cutting doesn’t do any good. It just leaves you bloody, hurting, and scarred afterwards. It really isn’t worth the temporary ”relief”. It only feeds into the bad feelings and even makes them worse. The only way to improve is to dump the habits once more and try harder again next time.

And remember, falling back down doesn’t mean you’ve failed. You’re always going to hit blocks in the road; mental illness is a very long and bumpy path, indeed. But the more times you fall down and get back will show just how much you’re trying to better yourself.
