The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) states that the nation’s homeless veterans are predominantly single men, who suffer from mental illness, alcohol and/or substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders.

Roughly 40% of all homeless veterans are African American or Hispanic, despite only accounting for 10.4% and 3.4% of the U.S. veteran population, respectively.

There are approximately 49,933 veterans are homeless on any given night.

About 1.4 million other veterans, meanwhile, are considered at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.

This Veteran’s Day, let’s do more than just honor our veterans. Let’s get them off the streets and into homes. I know it’s not a pleasant topic on this Veteran’s Day, but it’s important that we remember that these people have already sacrificed so much for their nation. They shouldn’t have to sacrifice even more.
