Does anyone have any advice on dealing with depression as a Christian?

Depression is difficult for anyone, but it almost seems doubly-painful for a Christian, right? Knowing our hope is secure, and knowing how much we’ve gained in Christ should make us happy, almost care-free! But sometimes, for various reasons, we feel like we’re in the dark. We wish someone would turn the light on. We turn to those means of Grace that we know should give us that light – prayer, meditation on God’s Word, and fellowship with his saints, but we find it all dry and powerless. Is this where you find yourself?

I’ve felt that way before, and while turning to the Lord helps a great deal, it’s okay to turn to friends, family, or even therapists if we need them. That is why God put those people in our lives. It’s dangerous to think that being a Christian will solve all of your problems and that prayer will heal everything, because it won’t. The Lord put other people and resources in your life for you to use as well. It is still good to pray and read God’s Word regularly, but seek outside help as well.
