Prison visit: Keeping it together?

0

On Thursday I am going to be visiting a relative in prison for the first time. It will be the first time I have seen him since early May. He is like a brother to me and I miss him a lot so I might end up being emotional when I see him. I’ve never been to a prison before so I think it will be scary enough being searched and checked and all that even before I get to see him, and then leaving him and not seeing him again for a while. He’s got a 5 year sentence so will probably serve 2 1/2 years. Can anyone give me any tips on how to keep it together while I’m there and when I see him? Thanks.

I have been through the same situation when visiting my father. If you have nothing harmful on you don't worry it's a quick search! You can always put in a piece of minty chewing gum to ease your nerves and wear something you're comfortable in. It will be hard leaving it usually is but you can always have visits and even write to him.

My step-father spent a small time in jail/prison and it was very hard for me to have the courage to visit so just remember that by planning on visit you are already stronger than you think! I decided to come prepared with a list of small stuff to talk about so that there were no awkward lulls for me to think about what was going on to make me feel sad or scared or lonely. One benefit to my visit in a way was that we weren't face to face but instead talked through a video link at the jail/prison. I kept it together personally until I walked outside and then had a bit of a cry in my car but what was important was that I was able to raise his spirits and keep it together while I visited. Just try to remember that you are a strong person and you can do it!
