I live in one of the richest counties in usa, which is in california. marin county.
I have lived in marin county for about 16+ years
Marin is a beautiful place but it has some real cultural oddities that you'll either love or hate. I can sum it up like this: all the women have dyed blonde hair, all the men have mustaches, all the kids think they can say and do whatever they please. The most common word used to describe Marin people is "entitled." They're not really snobby - more like clueless. Basic Marin mom lifestyle is being a soccor mom, driving an SUV, watching big screen TV behind a tightly locked door. Wearing the best and only the best designer brands. high heels to the grocery store (whole foods, of course.) behind the scenes alcoholic or pill popper (sometimes.) EVERYONE, even middle schoolers, tend to have personal trainers. It tends to be slightly boring if you are about 15+, which leads to many teens doing maaany drugs here.
For one of the wealthiest parts of the world, it certainly is a beautiful place. Right next to mt tam, good hiking areas everywhere, green, grassy, couple hours away from mt shasta, few hours from yosemite, hour from countryside feeling land, and 15 mins from sf. its good in location. the air is my favorite part of marin. i spent a little while living in utah, arizona, colorado, and idaho, and every time i step off the plane and into san francisco i just breathe in the fresh ocean air and ahhhhh its the best feeling ever. you dont get that in socal. its dirty and pollution. people here are very eco conscious, and it has turned in to some kind of "fad."
The kids have major attitude problems, though, so don't be surprised when your children start picking up the habits of their uber-entitled, spoiled brat, self centered, a-hole peers. Hopefully, theyd grow into themselves and realize all the entitlement is BS, and theyll become their true selves like i did. Drug use and promiscuity and eating disorders are big problems in Marin - typical upper class issues but exaggerated due to crappy pseudo-liberal parenting and too much money in the hands of undisciplined kids. For the people that live here that are poor, it can be hard, to feel so different and ostracized for not having the right "brands" or wearing the right things. luckily my grade seems to be the last of marin right now that was really snobby. everyone seems to have grown out of it, and it is truly a beautiful area. you feel like you live 5 mins away from the beach even if you're 30 mins away.

I live in very south Cali. Here it is fine, like Chicago with worse drivers. The culture here though, is slightly self absorbent. Other than that it is pretty with many different cultures, especially in San Diego.

I live is Southern California and I really like it! Where I am I'm an hour away from the snow, the beach, LA, and the desert, so there's a lot to do here. And about the earthquake...they happen all the time, but you NEVER feel them. Like once a year you'll feel one and even then they're tiny. I've lived here my whole life and the biggest one just made stuff vibrate for a couple seconds.
