We were so close, but recently he has begun to tell me that if I really know him, I’d run away, and I don’t think so. I really love him (as a friend and more, even though I do not want a ‘relationship’) and I want to show him that he can trust me and that I would not go away…

Just continue to be there for him and support him, if you had been friends with him for this long then there shouldn't be a problem continuing to be friends with him. He is probably just going through a rough time perhaps some depression so he is feeling a little insecure about himself at the moment. Thus why he is trying to push you away, so just don't go away. Continue your friendship and everything will work out fine. Don't worry about it too much. Just continue things as they are and it'll be fine.
