How to Go about seeing a therapist

0

I guess I want to know, how is the easiest way to go about seeing a therapist. I’m very afraid to do it, but with all that has been going on with me lately I thin it is a very wise choice to actually see whats going on inside my brain. Do I just call one up and set up an appointment? or do i need to talk to my primary doctor about any of this first? I guess what i’m asking is, I need help seeking help.

First of all, you've already taken the first step! Knowing you need help and seeking help is a huge step towards getting help, so congratulations on that. Believe it or not it's true what they say about the first step being the hardest part. First, you should find out which psychiatrists/psychologists are in your insurance network. From there you should look at the websites of the professionals in your network and what they specialize in. If your problem for example is social anxiety and you are a teenager, you may want to look for doctors who specialize in teenage social anxiety. My psychologist for instance specializes in women with ADD. She also has other specialties too but it's what she is known for in my area. After searching for the psychiatrists/psychologists in your area who fit your criteria see how they are ranked online by other patients. Once you find one or two that you like call/email and make an appointment. Just because you visit once doesn't mean you have to see them permanently! See what is out there and who makes you comfortable and go from there. I know it seems like a lot to do, but just remember, you already took the first step. You can totally do this!

I guess you can go about it either way. What I did was look up people in my area and find out who had experience with the issues I thought I was having. I picked a few that I thought might be good and I researched them a bit to make sure they were good at what they do. No malpractice, lawsuits, bad reviews, etc. After that I made an appointment with one and began to see them. I talked to someone I knew who also was in therapy and she had told me that after about the 3rd session if you dont feel comfortable or feel like you arent forming a connection with that person then maybe try someone else. I saw my first one about maybe 5 times and I knew it just didnt fit. So I picked one of the others I had researched and tried that one. Ive been seeing this psych ever since. It's been about 5-6 months now and Im happy with this one. I dont know if this helps but I hope it does. And if you ever need to talk you can always pm me

Don't be afraid!!! It's okay. You're allowed to seek a therapist, there's no "Way" to approach it. You can ask your doctor if he knows any therapist he reccomends, if you already have one, simply call in and set up an appointment for a first time therapy session. Everything will be fine. You will feel much better after attending your first session. :) Good luck baby!!!
