How to explain internet friend to parent?

0

So it’s Christmas time and I wanted to send a card to my internet friend. I asked my dad to drop off the card at the post office for me, and he noticed the address was in a different state. He asked he how I knew this person and I accidentally said I know him through my cousin and through Instagram.. How can I explain that it’s normal to have online friends and my friend is REAL? Also, how can I most simply explain how we met (through ig)?

Please please help.

These days many people communicate through social networks on the internet. Try to show your father that it's normal for people to communicate online and to make friends from all over the world. He might be a bit concerned, because in the end it's still a stranger behind a screen who might be lying, but if you show him that it's really a friendship then I'm sure he'll understand.

You could be honest and let him ask the questions he wants to ask, so he feels you are ok. Penpals have been around for centuries. If you feel you can't be honest about some details, ask yourself why and how do you feel about it.

honestly, unless your dad is super protective, i dont think you should have anything to worry about. having online friends & friends from other areas of the country isn't an uncommon thing, but think about it from your dads perspective first though too. because in reality, once you mail something, that person receiving it will have your address as well, and you don't want some crazy person showing up at your house one day... ya know? maybe if you could prove to your father that the person is not a fake, he wouldn't have a problem with it :3 good luck! hope this helped a bit.
