How do you deal with the self-destructive nature of Anger?

I have a tendency to self destruct when I’m angry. That means I intentionally do things that hurt me, and I know I’m going to regret later. When the anger subsides, it just turns into pain or sadness. I hate this. What do you guys do to deal with it? Or even, what do you do to calm down?

A punching bag or something that you could positively take out your anger on would defiantly be a great idea! But of course not everyone has that option >.> I have similar issues. I get angry and I used to go straight to my lighter. If you have your own room mess up your bed, throw your pillows around, wad your sheets up and throw em too. You can always remake your bed later (and being destructive when angry helps to cool it out. Can't hurt much with soft things). Find some music that you can absorb yourself into or an activity (vid games, writing, going for a jog, etc.) Holding an ice cub might help sometimes too (just don't have salt anywhere near!) as the cold will stimulate your senses. Just try out different things and find something that works for you. Best of luck recovering! ^-^

But, I want to clarify; anger is not by nature self-destructive. That is just your adjustment to it.

The punching bag is a perfect idea. Go with that. Get a punching bag. Redirect that aggressive energy onto something made for it.

I like to go outside and scream as loud as I can (screaming inside has proven to be quite alarming to family members) or just write it out. Meditation can sometimes help too.
