Without making a situation awkward, or taking a chance on ruining the relationship that is already established; try casually talking about what the other person may seek in a potential partner. The feelings may be mutual on both ends, but if you both are a little shy of saying so, it may never be known. Don't live in fear forever, just casually bring it up and see what happens.
