How do I start a conversation with an old friend who I haven’t spoken to in years?

An old friend of mine just transferred to my school and I need advice on how to start up a conversation without freaking them out… I’m worried they won’t want to talk to me or that they won’t even know who I am.. Has anybody got any advice? Thanks

"Hey [name], I'm Cat, remember me? I haven't seen you in X years/since X grade, how are you doing?". Possible topics to bring up for silences: where was he/she, how does it feel to be back, how does he/she feel about how your local zone changed. When you feel like it, end with "Ok, it was nice seeing you, I'm glad you are back, see you around", or even ask them to hang out sometimes.
Keep it casual, maybe short, it's perfectly social and polite, they will not be freaked out (unless the last time they saw you you chased them with an axe, or they have a perfectly good reason you gave them to be scared of you, if that's the case, avoid them).

be friendly and say hi, but approach them like a stranger. In case he/she recognizes you you can start a conversation. In case not well you can later on mention where you met beforehope it helps

"Hey, its been a while since [insert last time you saw each other]. Its okay if you dont remember me, it was a while back [smile]. So how has life been treating you?" Its a subtle.yet playful way to start off :3 hope this helps
