It isn't something that is ever really fixed. It's a fire inside of you that can never be extinguished, but different things can aggravate or dampen the flame.
Your first option should always be therapy. But some people don't have the affluence, patience, or desire to see a therapist. That aside, professional therapy, by the right therapist, is the best option.
If therapy isn't your thing, take a three step evaluation;
1. What are my triggers? (things that exacerbate my depression). What are my releases? (healthy, positive things that weaken depressions effect on my life). How can I avoid my triggers/embrace my releases? If you are triggered by sharp objects or certain thoughts, do your best to remove them from your life. If you can get on your bike and ride around your neighborhood and absolutely clear your mind, you should do it as often as you can.
2. Who can I talk to? Part of the therapy process that you cannot do yourself is talk to someone. Bouncing ideas around in your head is an easy way to think your depression has more control over you than it really does. Finding someone you can regularly rely on for conversation, even if it isn't about your feelings, is important.
3. Do I always believe that I can heal? For some people, the fire of depression builds and dies too rapidly to asses a healthy way of dealing with it. if you get discouraged from the path of healing when you are down, then maybe you aren't ready to take it on your own.
You will always, no matter what, find people who, may not be able, but will certainly be willing to help. I promise. Stay strong.
