My grandson is finishing high school with us. He flunked out in another state and came here to finish. He’s been a mess of bad behavior while here, sneaking out, lying, drinking, drugging [weekly drug tests stopped this.] He’ll graduate in mid-January. Then he’ll wait here until the USAF takes him. His mom does not want him back with her to wait for AF. My question. After he graduates…what do I do about him going out and curfew? We live in back-country town with 0 to do after midnight. I can’t sleep until he’s home, and he usually forgets to lock the door, so I always get up to lock it [I was attacked a few years ago at work, and locking door helps my PTSD]. So do I say, go where ever you want but be home by midnight cause after that the doors and windows are locked? I could then sleep? Or so I give him a key, and I won’t sleep till he comes home and I’ll get up to check the door. I’m at a loss…advise, please…

Considering your situation, you could say he needs to be home by midnight. Your house, your rules. Midnight seems late enough. If there's nothing to do after midnight anyway, then there's no reason for him to be outside after midnight. If you give him a key, you'll always be waiting up for him which isn't ideal for you. Sit down with him and explain why he needs to be home by midnight. If you were to give him a key, you could talk with him to make sure that he'd lock everything up when he gets home. In the end it's your decision.
